Franzix Lomba - “LE CHOC EST LA”

Between April and June 2021, Fransix Tenda Lomba has worked on a new research project as part of his residency at Atelier Mondial. “Le choc et là” (the chocolate or the shock is here) is inspired by chocolate.

The double meaning in the title refers to the cultural, economic, political and social shocks ingrained in the chain of cocoa exploitation, which Fransix traces from different places of cocoa origin to the world of chocolate consumers.

Juxtaposing elements from his parents’ personal archives about life in the Congo, some of which date back as far as the 1900s, and visual documents from Swiss archives and big Swiss chocolate companies, Fransix created large scale drawings that form the basis for his video animation.

The work narrates the diver-ging, yet deeply entangled, histories of chocolate production and consumption. It is a commentary on the collective memories of a post-colonial society and the bittersweet reality that the gustatory pleasure of chocolate is imbued with suffering.

We are linked by chocolate. Fransix Tenda Lomba is a visual artist from Kinshasa, DR Congo.

His practice spans drawing, painting, sculpture and animated video. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Kinshasa in 2006 and an artist based at Kin Art Studio in Kinshasa.

He has participated in several residencies in Europe, Africa and the United States, and is currently in residence at the Atelier Mon-dial in Basel.

Starting in September, he will commence a two-year programme at the prestigious Rijksaka-demie in Amsterdam.
